On Saturday, October 29, the music therapy staff welcomed Leah Ivory who presented a Continuing Music Therapy Education course. Leah is a well-known local musician accomplished in both classical piano and West African drumming. The workshop, entitled “The Roots of Rhythm: West African Drumming and Drum Facilitation”, was a lively and informative introduction to group drumming in the West African style. Participants learned about the historical and cultural context of West African drumming and some traditional drumming patterns and themes. The day concluded with participants practicing different facilitation techniques to bring into classrooms and music therapy sessions.
The music therapy staff was joined by several students from Eastern Michigan University. Because it was a beautiful autumn day, we jumped at the chance to drum outside underneath the falling leaves. A beautiful day of music, fun, and fresh air!
